Amateur ghost hunters can get away with spending a night in a haunted house with no equipment at all. However, if they want to have a reliable record of their experiences they will need to bring along some equipment. This hardware should be durable enough to withstand atmospheric changes. It will also need a decent battery life. The main purpose of the equipment is to have real evidence of the existence of the supernatural.
Temperature Monitor
People who have encountered ghosts often say that they felt the room get noticeably colder. It is therefore a good idea to bring along an automatic temperature monitor. It will help the ghost hunter see any drastic drops in the ambient temperature of the room. Infrared scanners are also handy in this regard.
Sound Recorders
When a supernatural entity makes its presence known they will usually make a sound. News sites such as BBC have articles about numerous reports of ghostly noises. Whilst these are common they are rarely caught on tape. Modern sound recorders can pick up minute noises. If the ghost attempts to communicate with the living a recorder is very useful.
Fixed Surveillance
Throughout the world ghosts are often seen but not caught on film. When spending the night in a haunted location the cameras should remain fixed to a position. This allows them to capture the subtle movements of a ghost. It is best to record as much footage as possible. Alternatively the camera could be rigged to record when motion is detected.
EMF Detectors
EMF stands for Electro Magnetic Fields. Experts on the paranormal believe that they are a signature of otherworldly activity. EMFs could be a by-product of the energy ghosts feed on whilst manifesting themselves. There are apps available that claim to monitor EMF fluctuations.
